At 2309 hrs on the night of 28 July 1942, Vickers Wellington X3668 took off from RAF Bourn, Cambridgeshire en route for Hamburg. On board were:
Sgt Peter Granville TEALL (19) Pilot.
Sgt Eric WEBSTER (27) Observer
Pilot Officer Robert James STUBBINGS, RNZAF, (22) Wt/OP
Sgt Ernest BRIDGE (31) Front Gunner
Sgt Norman Seaton COMBER (27) Rear Gunner
At a height of 2,300 ft, they were in collision with Short Stirling N6121, also en route for Hamburg. The tail plane of the Stirling was severely damaged making it virtually uncontrollable. The pilot maintained control long enough to enable the whole crew to bale out. The Wellington crashed between Rampton and Cottenham, 7 miles NNW of Cambridge and all on board were tragically lost.
The Stirling pilots crash report stated that the Wellington was spotted approx. 50 yds to starboard on a collision course. He applied full power and initiated a climb to starboard but was unable to prevent a collision. The collision wrote off ‘3 parts of the tailplane’. The Wellington was seen in a downward spiral.
The official report into the accident cleared both crews of any blame.
